Hank Harwood Humbled

Did you watch it? Was he great? Was he beautiful? Was he sweet, sharp, appealing, confiding, encouraging, enthusiastic? Did he see all the problems and have a solution for everything?

He pleaded for support. He was charming. Endearing. No rancor, no racism. Obama’s got a new speech writer, and Cody Keenan is a GOOD one.

He said all the things about America that I learned at my mammy’s knee. He said she was great, and noble, that her people were hard-working and compassionate, that they took care of each other, that they cared. I’ve heard all these things before, from Republicans, but they sound so good coming from that lovely mouth, with those perfect teeth.

I’m so glad this guy is my president, instead of the one we had for the past four years. Thank God that guy is gone and we have this new, nice one. That other guy, did you notice? He was mean. He scolded us a lot. I felt like a bad person. I felt selfish, ungrateful. He would glower at me, and use his special “angry” voice. He was punishing.

That other guy, he never said anything good about America. He went around the world bad-mouthing her. Bad-mouthing us. He apologized for all the good things we did and called us imperial for doing them. He called us arrogant, and said we had to learn from the rest of the world. He spanked us in front of everybody.

The old one knocked big business. This one wants to start right away to prove there’s no better place to do business than the United States of America. Who needs a Republican with a Democrat like that?

That other guy didn’t lift a finger or lend an ear to our embattled ambassador in Benghazi. Just let him and his men die. This guy says he’s going to take care of Americans all over the world, and not let anything ever happen to any of them again.

That other one pretty much ignored Syria, but this one’s going to keep the pressure on.

The other one thought that rights are given by government, but this one wants to protect our God-given rights.

The other one burdened our kids with debt. This one says we should accept our obligations to future generations.

The other one talked about people who live here. This one talks about citizens.

That other one wanted to grant amnesty to illegals; this one wants to send them to the end of the citizenship line.

The other one made outrageous promises, but this one thinks our government shouldn’t make promises we can’t keep.

The other one thought that everyone should get the same. This one thinks that if you work hard and meet your responsibilities, you can get ahead.

The other one wanted top-down solutions. This one wants the government to encourage individual initiative.

The other one snubbed Netanyahu, but this one’s going to stand steadfast with Israel.

We’re going to fix the bridges at last. The other guy said he was going to fix the bridges too. He got over 700 billion dollars to fix them. And then he got it again, in each of the next three years. That’s over 3 trillion dollars, that was supposed to be fixing the bridges. And he didn’t do it. He gave it away to his friends to build gorgeous buildings for failing solar projects, and make electric car batteries that nobody wanted. Mostly, he paid off the unions that backed him.

The other guy was racist. He had an attorney general who said he wouldn’t prosecute black people. I wonder who this new guy is going to put in his place.

The other guy scorned Republicans but this one didn’t have a bad word to say about them – just counted them along with Democrats and Independents as another political group.

I feel so good. Out with the old! In with the new!
